In this session, we will present an overview of a study about the use of IoT in schools. As a part of a larger project, in one of the studies, we engaged with IoT experts to discuss how IoT-based solutions could help to improve the health and well-being of students, teachers, and other school staff. Eleven experts were presented with previously identified students' and school personnel's needs and requirements. The preliminary analysis of the expert interviews' resulted in the identification of five major themes of how IoT-based solutions could help: improvement of learning conditions, improvement of teaching staff conditions, the safety of the school environment, waste management and cleaning, and data aggregation. Overall, the findings indicate that IoT-based solutions could aid health and well-being, however, not as standalone solutions but as part of larger, more advanced IT systems. Moreover, the experts implied that implementing such solutions in school might be problematic for various reasons, with information about minors being one of the main issues.

I am an academic with research interests around Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), focusing on psychological and cognitive factors, and UI design. A lot of my past research focused on usable and transparent privacy displays and how to enhance them with different techniques acquired from HCI, psychology, and behavioral sciences. I am also interested and actively researching topics of technology and behavior change, dark patterns and nudging, as well as health and well-being, in the context of privacy and security and beyond.
