Women's health technology (femtech) is a burgeoning industry that seeks to develop personalized health solutions for individuals identifying as female. From menstruation and maternal healthcare to longevity and chronic care platforms, the global femtech market is anticipated to be worth over $50 billion by 2025. Yet, most digital health companies entering the femtech market fail to prioritize three crucial aspects to their products and businesses: (i) accuracy, (ii) privacy and security, and (iii) scalability. This presentation provides a roadmap to the key legal and ethical challenges facing women's health companies, and offers solutions to ensure these companies build robust and internationally scalable businesses that are capable of driving long-term innovation in women's health.

We will take you through the opportunities, but also challenges for the future and give an insight of how we plan to overcome those. As more and more emphasize are put on person-centeredness in healthcare, but also in order to fully achieve the potential benefits of digitalization, it is necessary to further explore how could electronic health records shift from solely being a documentation tool for health professionals to rather a tool for secure collaboration and communication with patients and family caregivers. We will introduce you our co-designing journey on patient-generated health data on blood pressure and blood glycose levels.

This presentation will introduce the results of the joint Nordic PROTECT project (“Proactive health and welfare technology for Nordic users and societies”, 2021-2023) and discuss them with a future-oriented perspective. PROTECT has brought together a large group of Nordic researchers from several fields as well as stakeholders (altogether nearly 200 workshop participants from four countries). The new knowledge co-created in PROTECT contributes to understanding the specific contexts and life situations where proactive health and welfare technology (HWT) is expected to be increasingly applied in the Nordic countries. The new knowledge also encourages and enables further research on the topic. Sharing research-based knowledge about the similarities and differences in proactive HWT services, implementation, and policies – including challenges in proceeding from piloting to implementation – across the Nordic societies enables better overall understanding of the experiences and expectations of diverse users in the individual countries and in the region. This, in turn, will help improve policy interventions and innovations to enhance proactive and resilience-supporting HWT use and the quality of life and work of Nordic citizens and caregivers.
