Education empowers children with knowledge and skills that enhance their employability and is the most effective way to give them the conditions to fully participate in democratic life.
Multiple international laws and declarations exist to protect the right to education of children with disabilities. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities explicitly recognizes the right to education and calls for an inclusive education system. The Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) emphasizes the importance of inclusive and equitable education for all. Despite this, social stigma and lack of awareness lead to discriminatory and unfriendly school environments, significantly reducing accessibility. This violates their rights and deprives them of the opportunity to reach their full potential. How do we overcome these barriers? What interventions work to make education more inclusive and equitable?
Inclusive systems value the unique contributions children of all backgrounds bring to the classroom and allow diverse groups to grow side by side to the benefit of all. It is time to break down stereotypes and promote respect for diversity – leaving no child behind.
