Staff welfare has a profound impact on emergency services' abilities to meet targets, deliver appropriate levels of care and implement long-term strategies. Poor staff morale and high employee turnover are disruptive, expensive and result in sub-optimal service provision. As such, more organisations are turning to advanced modelling solutions to better balance operational performance and employee well-being. This presentation draws on first-hand experience from the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust (WAST) and details how data-driven modelling software enables the organisation to implement effective changes that prioritise employee welfare, respect operational targets and empower the team to do more with less.

Traditional spot-based patient surveillance methods have notable limitations, and there is substantial documentation on the benefits of more continuous monitoring approaches. Vitalthings, a Norwegian health technology company, is at the forefront of this evolution, developing contactless monitoring solutions that significantly enhance patient safety, operational efficiency, and overall cost-effectiveness. Dr. Thu will elaborate on how the continuous data harvested by this system serves as a foundation for future research and the development of AI models. CareMatrix is an innovative project addressing the challenges of multimorbidity in aging populations, impacting over 50 million Europeans. It advocates a shift from traditional, diagnosis-specific healthcare towards an integrated, patient-centered approach. Focusing on interoperability of digital health systems, CareMatrix leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) to enhance care quality and efficiency. The initiative, supported by Horizon 2020, involves key partners developing the INCA Solution - a digital platform for coordinated care management. INCA integrates patient data, supports shared care plans, and features a multidisciplinary approach, placing patients at the heart of healthcare. 

Artificial intelligence-based (AI-based) language analysis is undergoing a “paradigm shift” initiated by new machine learning models, large language models, leading to unprecedented accuracies over most computerized language processing tasks such as web search, automatic machine translation, and automatic question answering. The success of the large language models is mostly attributed to their capability to numerically represent words in their context, long a weakness of popular psychological research techniques that use “bag-of-words” or word count approaches. Large language models can enable psychological language analysis to quantify the meaning behind words and human language in its larger context and thus capture truer psychological states and traits of the person behind the words. We discuss evidence showing that AI's paradigm shift to large language models is the missing piece for a parallel transformation in mental health assessment from the strong reliance on rating scale responses to more accurate, fine-grained, and ecologically valid assessments by fully leveraging patients’ own descriptions. We believe that this is an essential step in a more data-driven healthcare. 

This project addresses the challenges associated with complex surgeries and extensive patient care tasks, utilizing a digital, AI-enhanced virtual companion. The aim is to empower patients in self-management by guiding them through their care path, providing access to health information, monitoring vital signs, ensuring appointment adherence, and facilitating comprehension of medical documents. The introduction of a real AI healthcare professional further enhances patient engagement, offering personalized support based on individual needs. 

This presentation highlights connected mental health interventions, with a focus on biofeedback-based interventions, designed to facilitate self-management of individuals' mental health.
