Life science industry firms play a crucial role in the healthcare landscape by leveraging research and innovation to develop and deliver globally utilized healthcare products and services. To achieve these outcomes, the industry must stay in the frontiers of adopting innovative technologies. However, these firms encounter challenges in scaling these solutions due to the complexities of internationalization in healthcare. The healthcare sector is characterized by national and regionally bounded systems, posing obstacles to the seamless integration of innovative solutions on a global scale. A significant hurdle globally for scaling is the interoperability issues within and between these systems, hindering the exchange of data in various formats from diverse sources—a crucial factor for the effective utilization of AI and other data-driven technologies.

 

The paradigm of information-driven care, incorporating big data and AI such as intelligent applications of ML, big data analytics, or Internet-of-Things (IoT), holds the promise of addressing several shortcomings in healthcare. By enhancing cost-efficiency, accessibility, and clinical excellence, this approach aims to provide patients with a superb healthcare experience marked by safe treatment and care. Additionally, these digital technologies facilitate connectivity among life science industries and various stakeholders within healthcare systems, dismantling barriers between silos and paving the way for integrated healthcare ecosystems. Recognizing the potential for mutual benefits among businesses, patients, and healthcare providers, it becomes crucial to comprehend the role of these technologies in the internationalization strategies of life science businesses operating in the healthcare sector.

 

 

 

The success of a business depends on its internationalization strategy, which must diminish entry barriers to diverse markets and facilitate the provision of solutions and products on a global scale. Research has identified severalkey success factors of internationalization: entrepreneurship, partnerships, and the organizational capabilities of firms.However, the healthcare sector faces unique challenges in internationalization, distinct from other industries. These challenges arise from the complex 'silo' structure of healthcare systems and specific institutional regulatory requirements. Meeting quality standards and adhering to nationally specific norms, regulations, and jurisdictions further add to the complexity. These obstacles in the internationalization of healthcare businesses may impede the creation of shared value in the futures high-quality, integrated, and sustainable healthcare—ultimately impacting all stakeholders, including businesses, patients, and healthcare providers. Drawing on cutting-edge insights into the crucial role of these technologies in the internationalization strategy of healthcare sector firms, and through collaborative efforts among academia, healthcare stakeholders, and industry partners, we have crafted a methodological framework. This framework is designed to underpin the seamless integration of healthcare systems. The workshop seeks to validate this framework and foster the co-creation of new knowledge for the future of healthcare, involving you as domain experts within the sector. The workshop is tailored for key actors such as managers, business developers, technology developers across diverse healthcare-related industries, and policymakers keenly interested in scaling of integrated healthcare.

Anna Zukowicka-Surma Moderator

Dr. Anna Żukowicka-Surma is a postdoc at The School of Business, Innovation and Sustainability (FIH), Halmstad University, Sweden. She obtained her Ph.D. in Management and Quality Sciences in 2020 from Kozminski University in Poland, and her Master of Pharmacy in 2003 from Medical University in Białystok, Poland. Prior to her academic career, she accumulated extensive professional experience in the healthcare sector. Her research is centered on business development, and healthcare innovation focused on foundations and innovation implementations for a sustainability transition.

Svante Andersson Workshop leader

Svante Andersson is a Professor in Business Administration at Halmstad University. His areas of research include innovation, marketing, entrepreneurship and international business. He has published in journals such as Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Marketing, International Marketing Review, International Business Review, European Journal of Marketing and International Studies in Management and Organization. He has extensive international experience as export manager and as guest teacher/researcher.

Jeaneth Johansson is a Professor of Business administration, Accounting and financial decision making at Halmstad University and she is also working as a professor at Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Luleå University of Technology. Her research interest broadly relates to innovation and entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and sustainability much in relation to financial decision making and assessment of business potential, development of collaboration models and business models as well as organizational change. Johansson’s current research deals with commercialization and implementation of MedTech and innovation management. The research covers issues such as scaling and alignment of logics between the demand side, i.e., healthcare organizations and the supply side, i.e., companies providing innovative solutions. She has published in scholarly outlets such as Journal of Management Studies, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Technovation, Small Business Economics and Harvard Business Review. She has been involved in developing educational programs for practitioners and has also been a board member in the New Entrepreneur’s Business Center Nord.  

Magnus Holmén Workshop facilitator

Halmstad University

Magnus Holmén is a Professor in Innovation Science with a focus on Industrial Management at Halmstad University. He has previously been working at Chalmers University of Technology and the Australian National University. He is a visiting professor at Gothenburg University and has been a visiting fellow at the Scandinavian Consortium for Organizational Research (SCANCOR) at Stanford University.
His research broadly relates to innovation, information drive care, industrial transformation, and evolutionary processes. His current research includes business model innovation processes, ecosystem formation, relating to areas such as artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing, healthcare, transportation and energy. He has published in scholarly outlets such as Research Policy, Industrial and Corporate Change, R&D Management, and Industrial Marketing Management, and has edited several books. He has been involved in developing educational programs for practitioners (e.g. Education in AI, human-centered design and innovation, and Managing Additive Manufacturing for Professional Engineers).
