How data empowers patients Passed

Tuesday May 14, 2024 10:30 - 11:00 F1

Lecturer: Mikael Rinnetmäki

Track: Personalization in Health Care

There is a strong open-source development community Nightscout, focused on making life with type 1 diabetes easier for both patients and their families.

This presentation follows the ten year journey of this community. It starts from parents of children with type 1 diabetes who hacked the interfaces of continuous glucose monitoring systems in order to implement their own remote monitoring solutions, when no such solutions existed commercially. The journey evolves to include creation of both hardware and software solutions to automated insulin delivery, used by thousands of patients, and explains how the efforts of the community helped streamline the market access for commercial solutions years later.

It's a truly inspiring demonstration of the power of empowered patients and the benefits of digitalization. Today, the Nightscout community involves tens of thousands of people. There are hundreds of developers and thousands of people working on documentation and support in a true pay-it-forward spirit.

Founder
Sensotrend Oy

I search for sustainable business models for digital health solutions as the founder of diabetes startup Sensotrend, advance interoperability between healthcare IT systems as the FHIR ambassador of HL7 Finland, advocate for patients’ access to high quality treatment as the chair of the Regional Network of Diabetes Associations in Pirkanmaa, and seek to advance the adoption of new technologies for diabetes treatment as the vice chairman of the Diabetes Unit of Sailab MedTech Finland. I live with type 1 diabetes and hold a M.Sc. in computer science.

Sensotrend makes life with diabetes easier by visualizing data and deriving actionable insights from dozens of medical devices and wellness trackers and facilitating sharing the information with healthcare professionals and peers. Sensotrend is a key contributor in the HL7 International Patient Access specification, a winner of the Fair Health Data Challenge by the Finnish innovation fund Sitra and a founding member of the MyData Global organization.
