Introduction

It is difficult to apply nursing theories developed in different cultural and professional contexts, and they are often underused in clinical practice. The literature suggests the importance of involving patients in the definition of care processes. Involving patients and nurses in the definition of a nursing care model (NCM) could guide clinical practice and respond to the actual needs of patients.

Objective

To develop an NCM that takes into account the cultural, historical and professional aspects of the context involving nurses and patients in its definition.

Methods

FM was chosen to guide the development of the NCM. A bottom up approach will be used involving nurses and patients receiving care.

There are 6 phases to the study:

  • Qualitative data collection in relation to how nursing care is actually delivered in our contexts and what is the idea of nursing care that guides nurses in their actions. Focus groups will be performed with nurses from different clinical contexts (January 2024)
  • Analysis of focus group data using FM (February 2024)
  • Qualitative data collection regarding what patients’ needs and expectations are regarding nursing care and what kind of involvement they consider is important in the nursing care process. Focus groups will be conducted with patients from different settings (March-April 2024)
  • Analysis of data from patient focus group using FM (May-June 2024)
  • Definition of the new NCM (July 2024)
  • Implementation of the new NCM (July 2024)

Expected results

We expect that the active involvement of nurses and patients in identifying cultural, historical and professional aspects of the context will allow us to develop a new NCM.

Conclusions

Defining an NCM by involving key stakeholders will allow for a model that takes into account the specific aspects of the context and can provide real guidance for nursing care.
