Scholars at Risk - an international network for Academics in Exile Passed

Friday November 24, 2023 10:00 - 10:30 CET Lila scenen

Lecturer: Pär Svensson
Panelist: Amanullah Shafaee

Each year, academic researchers face imprisonment, threats, torture, and even death due to their activities and ideas. Persistent attacks on academic freedom and higher education carry serious implications for scholars and students but also the society as a whole.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network protecting scholars who are at risk due to their academic work or political views. The SAR mission is to promote academic freedom and defend human rights of scholars, including the rights to freedom of thought, expression, and movement and right to education.

SAR supports scholars through the Scholars-in-Exile Program, which provides temporary positions and fellowships at partner institutions around the world. This program enables scholars to continue their work in a safe environment and maintain their academic and professional networks.

In this seminar, you will meet a representative from the Swedish SAR network and a researcher who is currently part of the Scholar- in- Exile program at Linnaeus University. The discussion will focus on challenges and opportunities related to both the program and to violations of academic freedom.
