Skellefteå is at the forefront of the green transition and is growing rapidly. Last year the population grew by 2,9%. Only the four biggest cities in Sweden grew with more people. The population growth is due to the establishment of Northvolt’s mega factory.  However welcomed, the population growth also brings challenges to the local community. Two out of three people moving to Skellefteå are men. Most of the men are moving in due to employment related to Northvolt while many of the women move in without an income of their own. This is unusual by Swedish standards.  If this trend continues it will create a tangible gender imbalance in Skellefteå, both in numbers and in purchasing power. This seminar will explore how this development might affect the local community and present an initiative launched to counter it?
