Many countries in Europe have a high percentage of health information in electronic format. Access to data is consolidated through centralized or federated platforms. Patients are often able to view their data through patient portals, but are not able to utilize apps to analyze the data.

HL7 Europe has created guidelines for opening access to health data to patient-facing apps. These guidelines propose practical and prioritized steps towards a rich ecosystem of apps that empower patients in becoming more active participants in their own health care, while guaranteeing safety.

This session presents these guidelines and offers decision makers the possibility to discuss and ask clarifying questions.

Mikael Rinnetmäki is the founder of the healthcare startup Sensotrend, the FHIR Ambassador of HL7 Finland, and one of the key authors of the HL7 Europe guidelines for opening health data to patient-facing apps.

Founder
Sensotrend Oy

I search for sustainable business models for digital health solutions as the founder of diabetes startup Sensotrend, advance interoperability between healthcare IT systems as the FHIR ambassador of HL7 Finland, advocate for patients’ access to high quality treatment as the chair of the Regional Network of Diabetes Associations in Pirkanmaa, and seek to advance the adoption of new technologies for diabetes treatment as the vice chairman of the Diabetes Unit of Sailab MedTech Finland. I live with type 1 diabetes and hold a M.Sc. in computer science.

Sensotrend makes life with diabetes easier by visualizing data and deriving actionable insights from dozens of medical devices and wellness trackers and facilitating sharing the information with healthcare professionals and peers. Sensotrend is a key contributor in the HL7 International Patient Access specification, a winner of the Fair Health Data Challenge by the Finnish innovation fund Sitra and a founding member of the MyData Global organization.
