The Nordic Council of Ministers' standardisation group for eHealth focuses on standardisation, and one of the tasks for 2023–2025 is to contribute to and ensure that the Reducing Clinician Burden (RCB) initiative is taken into account in standardisation work in the Nordic countries.
The published guide "Supporting the healthcare professionals' work and data quality through e-Health standards" is the result of the collaboration between working group members of the Nordic eHealth standardization group. The guidelines are also anchored in the main group. The working group has also consulted the Nordic eHealth Research Network's scientific experts regarding RCBs and has received valuable input to the guide.
The background to this guideline is the Nordic eHealth Standardization Group's mission, which is to contribute and communicate the initiative "Reducing clinician burden" (RCB) initiative. It has become increasingly important to find out how to support the daily work of healthcare professionals and how to facilitate better data quality through eHealth standards. There are also small, nuanced differences between the American-born term RCB versus how one understands the theme in a Nordic context.
Although a lot of thorough work is being done to reduce the documentation burden on healthcare professionals globally, there are still some characteristics and needs in the Nordic environments. Furthermore, data quality is considered increasingly important for both primary and secondary use of health data in the Nordic countries. The Nordic working group has formulated some principles and recommendations that all parties involved in the standardisation work should follow. They are intended to apply to improve data quality, to support day-to-day work and to help reduce the overall burden of clinical work on healthcare professionals. Principles include general aspects that should be followed by different stakeholders and are applicable to many different activities related to the development and use of standards. They form the basis for more detailed recommendations. The recommendations focus on more specific and actionable activities or stakeholder groups.
