The ambition of the Inauguration of the Swedish Pavilion is to mirror the vision and the key messages for our COP28 engagement. Hence, the inauguration aims to: - Illustrate the good examples of cross-border and cross-sector collaboration, public-private partnerships. - Showcase best practice examples in the areas of policy, finance, and innovations needed to mitigate the climate crises and to achieve the Paris Agreement. - Make sure our vision and objectives are aligned with the official negotiation agenda of COP28 and that conversations around adaptation, mitigation, finance, and loss and damage, are at the forefront of all our discussions. - Ensure a diverse representation in terms of gender, age, and nationality from the government of Sweden of and other UN member states, private sector, public sector, Academia, NGO, and youth. This transformation is a historic chance to build a better world. Together, let’s pioneer the possible.

The industry has to decarbonize if we are to reach the goals of the Paris agreement. Research, innovation and deployment of new technologies are necessary. Resilient and sustainable value-chains, a willingness to share risk and look for new business cases are key. The First Movers Coalition is one platform that match suppliers and customers. This seminar will explain how decarbonisation in value-chains is already happening today and how creating concrete demands and goals is a key for success.  

Today 14% of the global CO2 emissions comes from transports. At the same time transports are necessary for our society to function. Driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system demands a transformation that is as radical as when we left the horse and carriage to start using the combustion engine. This seminar will discuss how different parts of the transport value chain can and must contribute to be successful in sustainable transports.

Tidal energy is predictable and has the potential to balance the global energy system, complementing the intermittency of wind and solar. Minesto’s ocean energy kites are demonstrated in the Faroe Islands, a nation with one of the most ambitious transition schemes in the world, aiming to become 100% renewable by 2030. The technology is also applicable along Norway’s coastline. A cooperation between Sweden, Faroe Islands, Denmark and Norway could realize a new industry of ocean energy,and be a lighthouse project for ocean economies around the world. Minesto invites for a dialogue on how such cooperation could be reality, proposing a 200 MW buildout roadmap of tidal energy kite parks underwater.

To achieve net zero supply chains by 2030-2050, the MASSIV+ partnership explores a cross-industry standard for turning greenhouse gas emissions data into actionable information – and thereby reduce negative impact.

How could global food systems better sustain our planet and its people by 2040? The urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve ecological conditions to sustain the planet and its growing population by 2040 is the focus of a panel discussion based on Tetra Pak's white paper. The discussion will address three critical issues and five key objectives for a more sustainable future. Stakeholders from various sectors will explore the reconfiguration of global food systems to align with ecological, social, and economic imperatives, including private sector engagement and Tetra Pak's pathways for change.

As the world grapples with the dire consequences of climate change, the imperative for transitioning to clean energy sources has become increasingly apparent. This presentation delves into the critical reasons why the adoption of clean energy is not just an option but an urgent necessity for the planet's sustainable future. Additionally, it will provide a global outlook and stocktake over the diverse conditions and challenges faced by different regions worldwide in the ongoing energy transition.  

Sweden is committed to having net-zero emissions by 2045. This target requires a substantial transformation of all levels of society. As part of this mission, the Swedish Parliament in 2017 adopted a climate policy framework for Sweden. The framework includes climate goals, a Climate Act and the Swedish Climate Policy Councill.

The transition to clean energy hinges on clean energy technology supply chains and this is becoming increasingly relevant when it comes to longer gestation infrastructure development like power grids. As the energy transition accelerates globally and the share of electricity in the energy system increases from 20% to over 50% by 2050, we are looking at a four times increase in generation capacity and a three-fold increase in transfer capacity across our grids.  When it comes to power grids, there are increasing concerns if supply chains could cope with the massive needs to address capacity and complexity across the value chain, from critical minerals and components like semiconductors to key products like transformers, switchgear, high voltage cables and HVDC equipment. The IEA estimates that USD $1.2 trillion of cumulative investment would be required to bring enough manufacturing capacity online by 2030 for the world to stay on track to meet its climate and energy goals. Announced investments still only cover around 60% of the total investment needed. It is also increasingly evident that while approaches such as re-shoring and friend-shoring are being considered global supply chains would be essential for success if we are to address scale and speed.During this session, panelists will discuss current clean energy supply chain challenges, potential solutions and wider considerations such as national, regional and global industrial strategies as well as incentives and stimuli to spur investments and help accelerate the energy transition.

The session will discuss how growth, emissions reductions and economic empowerment can go hand in hand, and how successful partnerships and strategic alliances between local business communities in Sweden, the EU and globally are the main drivers of all three. 

To speed up industry transition and bridge the gaps to meet the Paris agreement’s goals, we need to set a clear, global framework to unlock the necessary deployment of clean energy technologies. Clean energy is the backbone of the transition to net-zero. New production capacity but also more transmission grids are necessary. What are the challenges and recommendations to get there?  

The Breakthrough Agenda report 2023 concludes that even if the transition to clean energy and sustainable solutions is accelerating, global emissions are still increasing and there is a need now to deploy near zero emission technologies at scale. For steel this means that we need 70 near zero emission steel plants by 2030. What is needed to get projects off the ground and how can value-chain collaboration and policy measures support this needed acceleration? 

The Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP) is a platform for coordinating interventions and leveraging resources to enable sustainable blue economy investments in the Mediterranean region.  The BMP seeks to increase coherence, cooperation and coordination among all stakeholders concerned to increase the impact and visibility of sustainable blue economy investments around the Mediterranean.  Today’s event will be a signing ceremony of the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP), which is a key milestone towards making it operational at the start of 2024.
