78. Threatened by the family Passed
Friday November 16, 2018 14:30 - 15:30 T6
Lecturer: Shahin Ashraf
Thousands of people live with oppression related to “honour”. Killing in the name of honour is the most discussed aspect of the phenomenon, but this is only one aspect of it. What is honour crime, or “patriarchal crimes against autonomy”? What is the potential role of faith-based partnerships in preventing and addressing honour crime?
Shahin Ashraf is global advocacy advisor for the international humanitarian organisation Islamic Relief Worldwide, with experience of fighting gender injustices in several countries. She will share with us a technical understanding of honour crime and the legislation around it. She will also talk about “Honour her”, Islamic Relief’s part in an annual global campaign against gender-based violence, which is part of a strategy to promote gender justice from an Islamic faith perspective.
