53. Randomly Selected - on ethnic/racial profiling within Swedish Law Enforcement Passed

Friday November 16, 2018 10:30 - 12:00 T1

Lecturers: Leandro Mulinari, Victor Olisa
Moderator: Katri Linna

The issue of ethnic/racial profiling within the Swedish Police Force has been subject to public debate in connection to the so-called REVA-project, through which the Swedish Police intensified its search for “irregular migrants” in public spaces and in relation to Civil Rights Defenders’ law suit towards the Swedish state after the discovery of a criminal registry of more than 4700 individuals of Roma descent being kept by the Police in the South of Sweden. Yet, very little systematic research has been done in Sweden on profiling as a method for combating crime. In late 2017, Civil Rights Defenders thus published the report Slumpvis utvald (Randomly Selected), authored by the criminologist Leandro Mulinari, on the issue of ethnic/racial profiling within the Swedish Police Force.

Dr Victor Olisa has spent years working on the issue of so called “stop and search”-methods within the British Law Enforcement and is currently carrying out research into police leadership at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In this seminar, criminologist Leandro Mulinari, Dr Victor Olisa and Civil Rights Defenders’ human rights lawyer Katri Linna discuss working methods within the Swedish Law Enforcement on the basis of Civil Rights Defenders’ report and contemplate on steps ahead.
