Life is about more than just surviving. Our human rights should enable us to live dignified & meaningful lives as full members of society, for the whole of our lives. For many older people, however, everyday life is reduced to survival.
Sparked by the war in Ukraine, the global food fuel and finance crisis is already having a profound impact on older people both in Europe and the Global South. This is exacerbating the negative effects of the persistent Covid-19 pandemic from which we still have not recovered.
Join this event to hear from older women from Sweden and Uganda about the impact that the cost of living crisis is having on older people’s rights and their sense of safety and security.
Through a question-led discussion between two older women, this event will explore how the current crisis is particularly threatening older women’s economic security, access to food and healthcare and increasing their dependence on others and the risk of violence , including in humanitarian settings.
It will explore the specific impact for women in older age, the link between economic and food insecurity and a wider sense of safety and security. The role of social protection systems and social safety nets in safeguarding older women’s rights will be discussed.
The event seeks to increase awareness and to promote solidarity across continents and across generations.

Peace Kyamureku Talare
A teacher by training, Peace Twine Kyamureku (63) spent 17 years with the National Association of Women Organisations in Uganda (NAWOU), the last eight of which were as Executive Director. After retiring, Peace volunteered with VSO in Tanzania before returning to set up the Rural Women and Youth Fund Uganda (RUTH), a grassroots capacity building initiative with a particular focus on youth and older women in rural areas of Uganda. She is a tireless advocate for women of all ages and has written extensively on women’s rights issues. In 2018, she was honoured with an award for her work on women’s rights by Women4Women.
Prudence Woodford-Berger Talare
PRO Global/Pensioners without Borders
Prudence Woodford-Berger is a social anthropologist with research experience from work on matriliny and gendered orders in Brong-Ahafu, Ghana. She has worked as a consultant and policy adviser in Swedish Development Cooperation on issues of gender, women’s rights and social development in various ways since 1978. Upon her retirement from a position as Senior Policy Adviser with Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs in 2013, Prudence has continued to be active in global development issues through the civil society sector. She is currently Chairperson of the Board of PRO Global/Pensioners without Borders since 2020.
