Internal political disturbances and interstate tension have led to increasingly challenging conditions for human rights defenders in the Maghreb region. In many countries, democracy and human rights are in decline, and the security situation for both individual activists and civil society organisations (CSO) are becoming more and more unstable. This regressive trend in recent years is particularly affecting women and youth.
In this seminar we discuss how to create safety and security for civic space actors. We ask how we can obtain sustainable security through the promotion of the social and economic rights of individuals, and how supporting youth is fundamental to this struggle. We do so through mapping out recent development and potential stakes in the region with help of security experts and representatives from CSO:s active in the region. The event analyses how to avoid escalation of conflict and what are regional risk factors and challenges. We then ask human rights defenders to identify the biggest obstacles, and necessary tools and strategies to overcome these. Especially focusing on youth, what type of support do they as CSO:s need from the international community?
