To achieve good quality science and high standards of animal welfare, a wide range of factors have to come together to provide the right framework within an organisation. This includes good leadership, communication and management and appropriate resourcing, as well as having the right values and a desire for continuous improvement. Establishing, promoting and maintaining a good ‘culture of care’ is a fundamental requirement if legal, ethical and animal welfare obligations, as well as those to personnel, are to be met. The phrase ‘culture of care’ can increasingly be found within legislation, guidelines and policy statements relating to animal experiments.  In the first part of this presentation, Barney Reed will review where and with whom the responsibility for achieving a good culture of care lies, and will talk about how the culture of an establishment may be assessed.

Under föreläsningen får åhörarna närmare bekanta sig närmare med ögats anatomi och fysiologi i syfte repetera sina kunskaper och att förbereda sig för kommande föreläsningar om sjukdomsprocesser i och runt ögonen hos hund och katt. 

In the second half, Georgie Wilkinson will talk specifically about the role of the designated veterinarian within this, and will provide some thoughts and a range of practical examples for how vets can contribute to an establishment’s ‘culture of care’.

Lantbruksföretagare Joakim Lindh från familjeföretaget Lindhs Djur & Natur har lång erfarenhet av att omsätta experternas rådgivning till praktiskt förebyggande arbete med mål att förbättra kalvhälsan på gården. I presentationen berättar Joakim om de strategier och rutiner som visat sig vara framgångsfaktorer på Hanåsa gård.
