The Precautionary Principle and Shrinking Civic Space

This seminar examines Sida’s decision to reject Islamic Relief Sweden’s application for a humanitarian partnership following an assessment by the Swedish Center for Preventing Violent Extremism (CVE). The decision was taken even though neither Sida nor CVE concluded that IR Sweden’s activities were anti-democratic . Against this backdrop, the seminar explores Sida’s application of the precautionary principle and considers broader questions of due process, proportionality and the risk of guilt by association.
