FGM is practised in a large number of countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. More than 200 million girls and woman alive today have undergone FGM. In Mali, West Africa, an estimated 89% of the female population between 15 and 49 years have been circumcised. Statistics show that since 1985, FGM has decreased by 15% on average in the countries where it is practised which is way too slow. For a large portion of the population, the practise of FGM has a religious connotation. So, in order to influence attitudes and behaviour, religious actors need to take part in communication and dialogue. Actors using an inclusive approach have been able to see whole communities abandoning practise of FGM.
In Sweden, there is an estimated 38 000 girls and women who have undergone FGM. Every year, girls in families originating from countries where FGM is practiced are at risk of being forced or tricked into a situation where they have to undergo FGM.
The seminar will present the current situation and challenges in Sweden and internationally. How this is related to health, culture and religion and what is needed in order to change attitudes and behaviour.
