Access to medicines is an integral, and indispensable part of everyone’s right to the highest attainable standard of health. Yet, it is estimated that 2 billion people, or one-third of the world’s population, are unable to receive or purchase essential medicines on a regular basis. While remarkable progress in the field of health is being made in developed countries, medicine in developing countries are often unaffordable, unavailable or unsuitable. Improving access to medicines and treatment is central to the achievement of universal health coverage (UHC) critical to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals which aim to ensure a healthy life for everyone and promote the wellbeing of all people and all ages.
