74. Climate change, Displacement and the Effects on Human Rights Passed
Friday November 15, 2019 14:30 - 16:00 Operan
Lecturer: Christina Daszkiewich
Moderator: Karen Da Costa
Panelists: Emmanuel Raju, Jan C. Semenza
What is climate change and what is its impact? Are people really being displaced across the globe because of climate change? If this is so, what is the likely impact on their human rights? Is climate change negatively affecting the health of individuals and communities? What does displacement linked to climate change mean for the enjoyment of the right to housing, the right to food and the right to an adequate standard of living? And how are population groups particularly affected, that is, women, children, elderly people, indigenous peoples, and many more? These are the key issues this panel shall engage with. Drawing on academic research from various areas, practitioner’s experience in advocacy and project execution, as well as on the implementation of public policies nationally and internationally, the panel shall comprehensively engage with the complex and urgent relationship of climate change – displacement, and – human rights. The panel will also take into account recent initiatives seeking to address human displacement linked to climate change, and what has been their impact so far.
