Northvolt was founded to enable the transition to a decarbonized future by establishing a sustainable battery industry. To do this, Northvolt is pioneering a new approach to battery manufacturing rooted in a commitment to fossil-free energy, sustainable sourcing of raw materials and recycling. Amongst its goals, Northvolt aims to secure a carbon footprint of 10kg CO2e/kWh by 2030 — a reduction of approximately 90% compared to the industry average today.

The company is currently delivering batteries from Europe’s first homegrown gigafactory, Northvolt Ett, in northern Sweden, and from its R&D and industrialization campus Northvolt Labs. Additionally, Northvolt is developing battery manufacturing capacity across new projects in Sweden, Poland, Germany, the US and Canada.

Founded in Stockholm in 2016, Northvolt has grown to over 5,000 people from over 120 different nationalities, and has secured over $55 billion worth of contracts from premium tier customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania, Volkswagen and Volvo Cars.
