In this presentation, Rien Wertheim will give his view, based on life-long experience with customers and stakeholders in the field, on the barriers we have to overcome to implement successful projects. His presentation especially dwells on the adoption of FHIR, the modern web-API based standard that is becoming more and more dominant in the European (and global) health IT industry. 

He will discuss the mechanisms that have accelerated the adoption of FHIR, as well as the counter-mechanisms that have slowed it down. Funding, culture, technology, all play a role and will be discussed. His presentation is also practical: which are the lessons learned and best practices from many interoperability projects Rien and his compay have been involved in?
