Emerging adulthood is a time of infinite possibility — and profound vulnerability. As young people navigate the turbulent waters between adolescence and adulthood, they face a shifting landscape of identity, purpose, career and independence. Today, many emerging adults are grappling with unprecedented levels of anxiety, loneliness, depression and self-doubt.

How does "growing up" in an era of constant change affect our youth? And how can we—educators, mental health professionals, policymakers, community leaders, innovators, and investors—ensure that young people can thrive? This panel discussion invites you to explore these questions and rethink how we approach mental health for the next generation.

Why are emerging adults struggling now more than ever?

  • Is it the rapid pace of societal and technological change? The pressure to "have it all figured out"? Or something deeper — perhaps the collapse of traditional support structures that once guided young people into adulthood? Could the expectations placed upon this generation be not only higher than ever before but also less aligned with their realities?

The potential of innovative mental health solutions:

  • Social entrepreneurs are key to challenging and complementing traditional systems and approaches. They test and pilot innovative ideas, and build much-needed solutions based on direct target group involvement. With these approaches, social entrepreneurs have a remarkable ability to revolutionize mental health support, but they can’t do it alone. To thrive and expand their impact, they require a nurturing ecosystem and the unwavering support of cross-sector partners.

The paradox of connection:

  • Emerging adults are the most digitally connected generation in history. Why, then, are they reporting unprecedented levels of loneliness? What are the hidden costs of online engagement, and how does constant connectivity shape their mental health in ways that we are only beginning to understand? What role does the online world play in their mental health journey — and how can it be harnessed to heal instead of harm?

Are we preparing emerging adults for the wrong life?

  • Schools and workplaces often focus on hard skills and productivity. But where is the focus on the inner foundation — the skills that foster resilience, self-awareness, and a sense of purpose? Are we equipping young people to thrive in life — or just survive in it?

Mental health as a community responsibility:

  • Mental health isn’t just an individual journey; it’s a collective one. How can institutions, families, and communities work together to build safety nets for emerging adults that don’t just catch them when they fall but help them soar? What role can new partnerships — between nonprofits, the private sector, and public health systems — play in creating scalable solutions?

This discussion is not just about solving problems; it’s about starting a movement. If we want the next generation to lead with courage, compassion, and creativity, we need to create a world that supports their mental well-being — not just their achievements. This requires collaboration, innovation, and a willingness to challenge the norms that have long defined our understanding of success.

The challenges emerging adults face today are complex — but so are the opportunities for transformation. Together, we can reimagine what it means to grow up, ensuring every young person has the tools they need to not just survive but thrive. And through conversations like these, we can lay the foundation for a future where mental health is prioritized as a shared responsibility, and where every emerging adult is empowered to realize their full potential.
