Showcase Data-reuse challenges tackled with IDEA4RC solutions
Challenge 1: data heterogeneity and availability (structure/unstructured/NLP/CDM)
Challenge 2: data security/Trust (capsule, federated approach)
Challenge 3: data findability and understanding
Challenge 4: data access
Challenge 5: data exploitation for research
A journey with IDEA4RC solutions
- The data holder perspectives (zero trust architecture, data modelling and interoperability, NLP for data extraction, ETL, federated infrastructure - animation on data journey) - E Gaeta, P Zampognaro, U Zulaika Zurimendi
- The user perspectives (experts presenting the solutions as a journey from data discoverability to
data use: findability, quality, access and federated learning) L Lopez, I Drympeta, F Martin

MD, PhD, Head of Evaluative Epidemiology Unit
National Cancer Institute, Milan
I am an expert in real world data research. PI of national and international projects exploiting secondary use of real health data (e.g. electronic health record, administrative database, clinical and population-based registries) and use of innovative solutions (e.g. data fusion; AI approach for defining causal relationship; AI solution to support interoperability of data sources). She is a member of the Scientific Coordination of EUROCARE (surveillance of cancer patients in Europe) and she was the founder of several international collaborations on rare cancers (e.g. RARECARE, RARECAREnet Asia,).
She is (co)author of more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals.
Eugenio Gaeta Föreläsare
PhD
Universidad Politecnica de Madrid
Eugenio Gaeta is a senior researcher and software architect at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, leading the technical design of secure health data platforms in EU projects. In IDEA4RC, he develops a Zero Trust Architecture for federated learning, enabling privacy-preserving analysis of rare cancer data. His work align with Secure Processing Environment expected within the European Health Data Space, integrating technologies like Kubernetes, Istio, and Open Policy Agent. With deep expertise in HL7-FHIR, OMOP, and SNOMED, Eugenio builds interoperable, secure systems that support cross-border collaboration in healthcare research.

Information Technologies Institute - CERTH
I am an Electrical and Computer Engineer from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) with 5 years of experience in EU-funded R&D projects. The intersection of law and technology intrigued me and led to my Msc in Law and Informatics from the University of Macedonia (UoM) and the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh).
In CERTH, I am working in project management as a member of the Visual Analytics Lab in eHealth projects (IDEA4RC, Gatekeeper, AI4HF, Protect-Child, and Pre-Commercial Procurement CORRAL, RAISE).

University of Deusto
Dr. Unai Zulaika Zurimendi is an Associate Researcher at DeustoTech - Deusto Institute of Technology, part of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto, as well as a member of the DEUSTEK research group. He defended his doctoral thesis titled "Towards more interpretable graphs and Knowledge Graph algorithms" in 2022. This thesis is situated within the context of Artificial Intelligence, focusing on the explainability of models based on Graphs and Knowledge Graphs. He graduated in Computer Engineering from the University of Deusto in 2017 and later completed the Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering at the same university in 2019. Simultaneously, Unai began working as a Research Intern at DeustoTech in 2016, supporting tasks and completing his Bachelor’s and Master’s Final Projects within various national and European projects, such as WeLive (an H2020 project) and Foodbar.
Currently, his research focuses on Artificial Intelligence applied to the healthcare field, where Unai participates in several projects, including IDEA4RC, PROTECT-CHILD, and Inception. In these projects, he develops data models and Natural Language Processing algorithms aimed at leveraging data within ecosystems associated with healthcare.
Since 2022, Unai has complemented his research activities with teaching engagements at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Deusto. He has taught several courses, including Intelligent Systems, Software Design and Development, and Algorithmics. Additionally, he contributes to other academic activities, such as supervising Bachelor’s Final Projects.
