Dr Marina (Nina) von Keyserlingk has devoted her entire career to supporting farm animal agriculture. After growing up on a beef cattle ranch in western Canada, she spent 7 years working in the animal feed industry working with multiple species, including poultry, egg, swine, dairy, beef and aquaculture before returning to aademia. In addition to her academic post graduate training in ruminant nutrition in both beef and dairy, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Animal Welfare and ethics before accepting her current academic appointment. In addition to her UBC academic appointment as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Chair in Animal Welfare she holds adjunct appointments in a number of Schools of Veterinary Medicine in Canada and around the world and is frequently asked to give lectures on farm animal welfare to veterinary students and also veterinarians through continuing education forums, both nationally and internationally. She has published over 300 peer reviewed articles;; her contributions have profoundly shaped the field of animal welfare science. In 2018, she received the prestigious Hans Sigrist Prize, the premier annual award of the Hans Sigrist Foundation, University of Bern, to an academic researcher who is viewed as an international ground-breaker in their field, which in 2018 was ‘sustainable food production of animal origin.’
