Social media - a tool for peace in Cameroon Passed

Friday November 16, 2018 12:00 - 12:30 Globala scenen

Speaker: Sylvie Ndongmo, ordförande IKFF Kamerun (WILPF Cameroon)

Social media is a powerful tool that can be used for information and dialogue, but also to divide people. This can have serious consequences, especially in conflict contexts. Platforms are used to manipulate the truth, spread violent messages and hatred. To prevent the country from falling into a cycle of violence, WILPF Cameroon has held trainings on non-violent communication as a tool to promote peace. What can we learn?

Ms. Sylvie Ndongmo is the President and founder of WILPF Cameroon, and member of the African Union Steering Committee for the fund for African Women. Ms. Ndongmo has been very instrumental in advocating for peace and security in Cameroon, and is currently leading the advocacy process for UNSCR 1325 National Action Plan in Cameroon.

For 21 years, she has been raising the voices of Cameroonian women and advocating for their political and social rights, and their inclusion in governance and peace processes. Ms. Ndongmo has been able to organize women’s groups across borders throughout Africa to find new solutions to the increasing security challenges on the continent.

She sees conflict prevention as key. It is less costly to prevent conflict than to deal with the effects of war. For her, ‘’no development is possible without peace and no peace can be achieved without women''.
