Empowering individuals and inspiring changes in Belarus

Torsdag 9 november 2017 14:00 - 14:30 Globala scenen

In Belarus disabled people belong to the vulnerable and marginalised group, as their right to work, study and being active members of society is strongly limited. Recently the country has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It has given hope to more than half a million people who live with different types of disabilities.

Since 2008, the United Nations in Belarus was undertaking efforts to achieve these changes. Most recently, following the UN70 Express initiative held in October 2015, UN launched Inclusive Belarus: Leaving No One Behind in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals advocacy campaign in 2016 focused on goal 10: Reduced Inequality.

ShareMusic & Performing Arts has been a part of both UN initiatives, raising awareness of the potential of disabled people and advocating for their rights. It has reached out to disabled people themselves and their families, professionals and journalists, changing attitudes and inspiring changes.

Sophia Alexandersson, CEO & Artistic Director, ShareMusic & Performing Arts, hosts the mini-seminar, inviting Lizaveta Zhuk, former UN Communication Specialist in Belarus, to the conversation about significant changes brought by UN in the country.
