Dr. McConnell joined Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) in
November 2008 after being named the Medical Center’s first Chief Executive
Officer. WFBMC is composed of the fully integrated healthcare system (Wake
Forest Baptist Health), Wake Forest School of Medicine and Wake Forest
Innovations. As CEO, he had the overall responsibility for the Medical
Center’s research, commercialization, education, and patient care programs.
The Medical Center’s annual operating budget is $2.5B. Previously, Dr.
McConnell was the Executive Vice President for Health System Affairs at the
University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. In that capacity he had the
overall executive responsibility for the UT Southwestern faculty physician
practice, University Hospitals, and outpatient clinics.
A urologist and translational researcher by training, Dr. McConnell has served
on the Advisory Board of National Institutes of Health-National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and was elected to the National
Academy of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 2004. He has
received the Barringer Medal from the American Association of Genitourinary
Surgeons and the Fuller Award from the American Urological Association in
recognition of his contributions to the field of prostate disease. He has
published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and ten books.
Dr. McConnell has been a consultant, advisory board member and clinical trial
leader to medical device and pharmaceutical companies, including Merck,
Glaxo and Pfizer. More recently, he has help internal colleagues and start-up
companies seeking to commercialize digital health platforms. He serves on the
Advisory Board of FCA Health Innovation Fund I and II.

Jonathan P. Gertler, MD, is Managing Partner and CEO of Back Bay Life Science Advisors and Managing Director, BioVentures Investors MedTech Funds. He has over 30 years of clinical and scientific experience, and extensive advisory work with biotechnology, diagnostic, medical device and health care IT companies in both the private and public sector. A former vascular surgeon and founder of several life science companies, Dr. Gertler is a frequent speaker and writer on strategic issues facing life science companies at all stages.
Before founding Back Bay in 2010, Dr. Gertler served as Senior Partner and Managing Director of Leerink Swann Strategic Advisors, Head of BioPharma Investment Banking at Leerink Swann & Company, as well as Head of Life Science Investment Banking at Adams Harkness/Canaccord Adams. Dr. Gertler founded Antyllus Therapeutics, a development-stage biotechnology company focused on aortic diseases, and Biofeedback Systems Design, a digital medicine company developed for the wellness market. Dr. Gertler also founded Cardiovascular Technologies, which successfully exited in 2001. Over the course of his advisory career, Dr. Gertler has counseled companies on growth and liquidity strategies and has been responsible for significant aggregate consideration in M&A, private and public equity for biotech, medtech, and HCIT companies. Prior to his advisory and consulting career and during the latter phases of his academic career, he was a Venture Partner at SV Life Sciences from 1997-2001.
Dr. Gertler was an academic vascular surgeon, primarily as Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He has published extensively in clinical vascular surgery and endothelial and smooth muscle cell biology and has served as an ad-hoc editor for the Journal of Vascular Surgery, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Critical Care Medicine and Surgery, among others.

Rick Shrum, Sr., is a member of WakeMed’s executive leadership team as vice president and chief strategy officer. In his role, Rick is responsible for identifying, evaluating and executing market opportunities and strategic initiatives to help WakeMed achieve its mission and aspirational goals. He is also responsible for leading the behavioral health services of the system. Rick has held positions of increasing responsibility throughout a 30-year career in Acute Care Hospital Administration (both Medical/Surgical and Behavioral Health). Prior to WakeMed, Rick was the Chief Operating Officer of Diamond Healthcare Corporation, the second largest behavioral health management company nationwide that partnered with acute care Hospitals and Health Systems nationwide to implement, improve, and expand their behavioral health offerings. Prior to that, Rick was Group CEO of National Healthcare Corporation, an investor owned medical/surgical acute care hospital company. Rick holds masters’ degrees in Health Administration and Business Administration from Xavier University.

Todd Wiebusch Föreläsare

Todd is an experienced health care investor and operator with 30 years of experience in the DME, Home Health, Hospice, SNFs/ALFs and Rehabilitation industries. Based in Charlotte, NC, he is currently CEO of CHMG Capital, LLC, a private health care investment and operating firm, and Executive Chairman of Saebo, Inc., an international provider of Stroke Rehabilitation products and services – www.CHMGCapital.com .
He is also a partner in www.CourageVenturesFunds.com, an early-stage VC fund based in Helsinki investing in digital health and wellness companies that aspire to come to the US Market. He made his first visit to the region in 1992 and began investing in Finnish funds and companies in 2005. He currently has ~10 direct investments and approximately another 40 indirect investments in the region through various partnerships and fund investments.
Since 2016 he has also served as Honorary Consul of Finland for North and South Carolina.

Tom has over 30 years of healthcare leadership experience in a wide range of settings. He currently serves on the boards of FCA Innovations Fund I companies Nvolve, Shiftwizard, Feedtrail, and Novarus Healthcare. Tom previously was Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Services for Novant Health. Prior to joining Novant, he spent 14 years with MedCath, a KKR and Welsh Carson portfolio company, as CEO of subsidiary MedCath Partners and as Chief Development Officer. Tom co-founded and lead Decision Support Systems, a healthcare IT company, that was started in 1993 and sold to Cortex Communications in 1998. He also served as Vice President of Administration at Atrium Health from 1987 to 1993. Tom received MBA and MPH degrees from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a BA from The College of William and Mary.

Mr. Kratzman is an international business strategist with over 35years’ experience in international business development, bringing new companies and ideas to market. He currently works with startups and SMEs to clinically validate their ideas and grow their companies. He co-developed Finland’s national start-up mentoring and coaching program, Kasvu; and founded the Nordic AMPlify Accelerated Market Entry program for digital health companies. Val led the KPMG team that founded the global consulting company BearingPoint. He is a graduate of the Wharton Business School and the Pennsylvania State University concentrating in healthcare administration and corporate effectiveness.
