The relationship between human rights and democracy is not self-evident. There are voices who argues that there is a difference between human rights on one hand and civil rights on the other – and that democratic states are faced with the choice which protection of rights should be rewarded. So why are human rights needed in a democracy? How can the value of human rights be understood and defended in a time of increasing political polarization?
