Technology is slow to be fully accepted in the medical field. While improvements are made to devices and systems on a consistent basis, the adoption of these techniques proves to be difficult on a wider scale. When introducing new technologies, a host of factors can assist to help spur innovation and faster, widespread adoption. We hope that our research aids the improvement of technology in this vital field. This presentation focuses on two use-cases within the medical field: the 1177 patient-to-doctor online chat system and an internal digitized surgery clinic. We worked in partnership with Åsa Cajander and Uppsala University to identify critical issues and look into innovation aspects of the current technologies. For the chat system, we developed a method of integrating an artificial intelligence system to aid in diagnosing patients with only the oversight of medical staff, which should free up work and reduce the wait time for 1177’s triage service. While innovative AI and machine learning algorithms has huge potential to increase efficiency, human-ai interaction design is extremely important to help ensure that people will want to use the system itself. For the surgery clinic, we looked at a new decision support board at the local hospital, and found ways to better use this innovation to assist surgeons in allocating time for surgeries, as well as how to assist in rolling out these boards to other departments and hospitals in Sweden. While the support board has been accepted by the experimental surgery clinic it was first introduced to, changes need to be made to allow for endorsement from other clinics. In relation to the case-study specific results of our research, we will present ways to further serve health professionals’ needs with technology while also looking into how these technologies will continue to spur innovation in the future. Designing systems that are not only cutting-edge, but also drive additional developments and innovations is important for fueling innovation in the healthcare sector, and potentially beyond.
