SalMar After the merge with NRS SalMar will be Norway’s second largest salmon farmer just marginally behind Mowi when it comes to harvest volumes. SalMar controls the entire value chain of salmon farming from brood fish and smolt to farming, processing and sales & distribution activities. The company is headquartered on Frøya in Mid-Norway and is controlled by its founder Kverva. SalMar has a 50/50 joint venture in Scotland together with Lerøy Seafood Group, Norskott Havbruk, which is handled as an associated company. SALM in 2016/17 acquired majority control in the Icelandic salmon farmer Arnarlax, now controlling ~51% of the company.
SalMar’s Norwegian farming activities are concentrated around two geographic: Northern Norway with ~34 licenses (before NRS merge) and Mid-Norway with ~69 licenses (before NRS merge). In 2016, Salmar was also awarded 8 development licenses related to building of the new offshore cage, Ocean Farm. The first fish from this facility was harvested in Q4 18/Q1 19 with good biological performance, and the second harvest took place during 2020. SALM was awarded another 8 development licenses and will build an even bigger offshore farm (Smart Fish Farm) that will be located 30 miles offshore. In relation with this SALM has incorporate a new company called Salmar Aker Ocean, which aims to lead the development of offshore farming together with Aker ASA.
SalMar has been an active consolidator within the salmon farming industry. The most recent acquisitions includes the ~51% stake in the Icelandic salmon farming company Arnarlax, 45% stake in Refsnes Laks and 52% stake in NTS which also is the main owner of NRS.
The company has been listed on the OSE since 2007 and is today controlled by the founder through Kverva, holding a ~51% stake before the merge with NRS. Other major shareholders are Norwegian and international institutional investors.
