Mowi is the world’s largest salmon farmer with farming operations in Norway, Scotland, Canada, Chile, the Faroe Islands and Ireland. In 2017/2018, Mowi acquired Grey Aqua and Northern Harvest, and are now also present in East Canada. In most of its farming regions the company is a fully integrated company from brood fish and smolt to farming, processing/sales, and feed.
Mowi is headquartered in Bergen. The company employs 12,500 people and is represented in 24 countries. Mowi controls around 20% of Norwegian salmon farming licenses and is by far the largest operator. Group harvest guidance for 2022e is ~460k tonnes HOG, which equates to a global market share of around 20%. Mowi Norway is the largest farming unit in the group, with a harvest volume of ~260k tonnes in 2020 (~20% of Norwegian market share).
Mowi started feed production in 2013. Initially, the feed plant was going to supply Mowi with around 60% of Norwegian feed demand, but enhanced plant efficiency has upped this to supply ~80% of Mowi’s Norwegian production. In 2015 Mowi announced that they will build a second feed plant in UK which started production in the end of 2019.
Through the Morpol acquisition in 2013, Mowi strengthened its downstream activities. Value-added processing activities are now conducted in Norway, Chile, Ireland, US, UK, Canada, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, China and South Korea. Key products in VAP are fillets, steaks, portions and loins of fish, coated and smoked seafood and elaborated ready to cook seafood dishes. In 2018, the company changed its name to Mowi, to increase its focus on developing a true global salmon brand. This brand will be rolled out gradually, starting with several countries in Europe.
