Nordic Aquafarms is a pure-play land-based seafood company fully integrated with their own RAS-design, proprietary technology, construction and project management, production and sales. Established in 2014 in Fredrikstad, Norway, the company has rapidly developed into a considerable business operation with international involvements.
Nordic Aquafarms has currently two land-based facilities in operations. In Frederiksted the company has built a RAS facility with the potential to produce up to 1,500 tonnes of Atlantic Salmon. While in Denmark the company owns the Yellowtail Kingfish producer Sashimi Royal. The company has also established a company in US, working to receive all necessary permits for production of salmon both in the state of Maine and state of California.
Nordic Aquafarms main objective is to build several land-based facilities for salmon production. The first facility is already up and running in Fredrikstad, with the first 100,000 smolt at around 100g inserted in the facility in May/June 2019 and harvested during 2020. The company are now harvesting regularly and selling fish in several Norwegian retailers. In addition to the facility in Norway the company is planning to build a 33k tonnes facility close to the city of Belfast in the state of Maine and has also secured land for construction of a 22k tonnes facility close to Eureka in California. Both facilities are waiting for the final permission before construction can start.
Bernt-Olav Røttingnes was hired as CEO for the company in October 2018, while the founder and previous CEO Erik Heim became head of Nordic Aquafarms Inc with the responsibility for building up the facilities in US. Nordic Aquafarms is backed by a financially solid group of investors from various parts of Norway. The largest owner is Rasmussengruppen, represented in the board by Håkon Aschehoug, while the second largest owner Pemco is represented by Bjørn Knappskog. Other owners include several Norwegian family offices and private investors.
