In the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) volunteers train each other to be provide relief in case of disasters. A distinct challenge consists in training people to provide adequate relief in unknown and unanticipated disaster scenarios. While the basic training provides a basis for all further training it also creates a demand in volunteers to be provided with model solutions that fit all problems. Given the vast amount of possible disasters and their specific composition it is impossible to provide such model solutions. This practical experience report describes the practical approaches how creative methods can be employed in practice and training to create good learning experiences that empower trainees to be able to provide adequate relief in unforseen and unanticipated situations.
