Columbi Salmon is a land-based salmon farmer planning to build its first facility Belgium. The company was founded by the Refsnes family in 2019.
Columbi Salmon will use RAS technology in its land-based farms, delivered by Billund Aquaultue. The first farm will be in Oostende, in Belgium, but the company plans to establish additional locations in Europe. The company will buy eggs externally, before farming the salmon in its tanks and process it in its own primary processing plant.
In addition to farming salmon, the company will also farm lettuce in its aquaponics facility by using the sludge water from the salmon farm. In its system, some of the water will be transferred to a large greenhouse (aquaponic) which has the capacity of growing up to 4k tonnes of lettuce annually, without using a single gramme of soil.
