Hydro REIN is Hydro’s vehicle to develop a range of renewable energy solutions to assist industries with management and optimization of its energy consumption and storage. Established in April 2021, this new separate busines unit is a part of Hydro’s strategic direction of strengthening its position in low-carbon aluminium and exploring new growth opportunities.

Hydro REIN delivers hydro-, solar- and wind power for industrial applications. Its renewable asset portfolio is situated in Brazil and in the Nordics, and produces 9.4 TWh annually. Since 2015, Hydro has contributed to 2.5GW of greenfield wind projects in Norway and Sweden from a long-term offtake position. In 2020, Hydro Energy took over operatorship at Norway’s second largest wind farm, Tonstad Vindpark (208 MW), and developed battery use cases at Hydro’s plants to establish storage capacity. Hydro REIN has a pipeline of wind and solar project leads for long-term power supply to Hydro’s plants, and is looking for opportunities beyond the Hydro portfolio.
