Type of event: Digital event ONLY

This workshop is about Localization and practical use of SDGs in local and regional planning.

Since the first government white paper on sustainable development in 1989, the Norwegian government has talked about the importance of integrating the goal of a sustainable development in all major policy-making and public planning processes at all levels of governance. In recent years, the government has renewed this request, and talked a lot about the importance of integrating SDGs into social and spatial planning.

This national emphasis is a great step in the right direction! However, the reality is that while some municipalities are well underway to comprehensively integrating SDGs into their planning processes, many more are struggling to turn the national talk into local action - the buzzwords into outcomes.

This session will begin with an historical review that will bring you up to date with how we got to where we are now, and what important lessons we must remember going forward. We will then feature researchers working on the ground with SDG implementation who will reflect on their experiences of working with stakeholders at a local level, providing insight into some challenges, markers of sucess, and unexpected outcomes. The talks will be followed by an open discussion.

Join us to learn how and why we are using a holistic and inclusive target tracing method instead of focusing on one SDG and a time.  What the benefits and challenges are of working with SDG target clusters on a local scale, and even more importantly - what an SDG target cluster is and why should you make one for yourself!

Chair: E. Zoe Walker, Msc.

Hi! I'm a human geographer with an interdisciplinary PhD in societal development and planning. I have worked as a Senior Researcher at Nordland Research Institute in Bodø/Norway for almost 4 years. In my PhD, I explored how legitmacy challanges van be handled in collabrative governance arrangments in nature conservation and how coflicts are made visible or invisible in conservation planning. Currently I'm involved in several research projects, spanning from urban to rural contexts and local to regional level, exploring how the SDGs can be made locally relevant and implemented in planning.

Hi! :D I'm Dorothy J. Dankel, Ph.D. (41), a transdisciplinary researcher with expertise in Responsible Research and Innovation in marine science. In 2009, I incorporated a variety of scientific themes in my Ph.D. thesis “Building blocks of sustainability in marine fisheries management” including numerical modeling of marine fishery strategies using harvest control rules. After my specialization in marine fisheries management with research stays at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, School of Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, I began research at the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Bergen. During the “Reflexive Systems Biology” project funded by the Research Council of Norway, I worked closely with a social anthropologist in synthetic biology labs in USA and applied social science and anthropology methods including ethnography and text analysis. From 2009-2015 I chaired the ICES Working Group Fishery Systems (WGFS), and subsequently led the transition to Working Group Maritime Systems (WGMARS). Since 2012, I have been a board member of the Nordic Marine Think Tank (www.nmtt.org) and currently Vice-Chair. I'm a co-editor of the textbook Management Science For Fisheries: An introduction to simulation-based methods, and have co-edited a special issue for the academic journal Futures on social and ethical topics of biotechnology and society.
