The Geological Survey of Finland GTK produces impartial research and services in support of decision-making in industry, academia, and wider society to accelerate the transition to sustainable and carbon-neutral world.

GTK employs more than 400 experts specializing in mineral economy, circular economy, solutions related to energy, water and the environment, as well as digital solutions. GTK is a research institution governed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, operating in Finland and globally.

GTK is an expert in minerals, groundwater, aggregates, geothermal energy and other geological resources. Our operations support the growth and innovations of the Finnish economy through the developing and sustainable use of natural resources. GTK’s operations are based on high-quality research and strong partnerships.

Our duties include:

- Providing expertise for the mineral resources policies of Finland and the EU
- Mapping geological resources and maintaining geoscientific datasets
- Producing geological information to support decision-making
- Promoting the competitiveness of business by producing applied research

New geological information is needed, for example, to promote the recycling of critical raw materials, to survey geothermal energy potential and to map groundwater areas. Digitalisation, artificial intelligence and machine learning create opportunities for developing new geology-related services.
