Case Study: Swedish ocean energy kites supporting Faroe Islands to reach 100% renewable by 2030 Passed
Monday November 14, 2022 12:00 - 12:40 EET Digital
Moderator:
Anna Lindstedt, Swedish Ambassador for the Ocean
Speakers:
- Minesto: Martin Edlund - CEO
- SEV: Terji Nielsen - Head of R&D
- SEV: Helma Maria Trondheim, writing PhD on tidal energy, Aalborg University, 2022
- Daniel Westlén - State Secretary to Minister for Climate and the Environment Romina Pourmokhtari
The Faroe Islands has one of the most ambitious schemes for green transitions, aiming to reach 100% renewable by 2030. The tidal energy has potential to supply 40% of the energy demand by 2030, and this small but complete island nation can lead the way for other island nations or coastal economies.
Minesto, developer of a game-changing technology to harness clean electricity from the ocean, has successfully commissioned its first Dragon Class model “Dragon 4” underwater power plant in Vestmanna, Faroe Islands. Anna Lindstedt, Swedish Ambassador for the Ocean, recently visited Minesto’s grid-connected site in the small village of Vestmanna: listening in as the Ambassador, Minesto and local utility company SEV discuss and showcase how predictable tidal energy can be pivotal for the path to a net-zero system in the Faroe Islands.
