Track: Panel Organisational Governance

This symposium will present the rural and sparsely populated region of northern Sweden and the challenges faced by the rural population when it comes to accessing health care, and how it can be done, including a person-centred care perspective. The presentations start with setting the scene and why it is important to do research in SPR, an area located in more than 60 % of the world, by Anette. Video consultations (VC) are becoming a widely adopted alternative to face-to-face interactions and offer a safe and accessible solution; however, their impact on the quality and personalization of care remains underexplored, particularly in dietetic practice. Sarah has explored person-centred care in video consultations from the experiences of Swedish dietitians and their patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a specific focus on person-centred care using a mixed-method design. In rural and SPR, there is a lack of physicians, and sometimes the only way to meet a doctor is via VC. Lina will present patients' experiences of VC with a physician. The patients are living in home-based settings and receive home healthcare or reside in nursing homes. The results of the thematic analysis reveal insights at a micro, meso, and macro level regarding feelings, healthcare-professional relationships, and technology.  Medication-related problems (MRPs) are common among home-living rural older adults who often face barriers to access healthcare, such as long distances to healthcare services and poor continuity of care. Annica is developing and evaluating a tele-pharmacy service in primary care in Northern Sweden’s rural areas as a single-arm, non-randomised, interventional pilot study. The aims are to develop and evaluate this service regarding MRPs, medication adherence, beliefs about medicines, and quality of life. These studies have been performed by the Swedish Centre for Rural Health, which will be further presented by its manager, Andreas Lundqvist.

The Swedish Centre for Rural Health

I am a PhD student in the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University, and a registered nurse specialized in elderly care employed as a PhD student and project coordinator at the Swedish Centre of Rural Health at Region Västerbotten. I am experienced and educated in mainly qualitative methods and qualitative systematic reviews. I have, moreover long life expereince of living and working in a rural area of rural northern Sweden and it's healthcare system. The primary aim of my doctoral research is to explore experiences and expectations surrounding healthcare encounters facilitated through digital solutions, such as videoconferencing technology, in everyday clinical practice. This includes both emergency situations in the emergency rooms of community hospitals in Västerbotten, and planned consultations with long-term care residents and their regular physician. My thesis also seeks to understand how healthcare services respond to citizens’ needs for high-quality care within the context of sparsely populated rural areas and the healthcare system in northern Sweden.
