Right now, it is very possible, that many of startup founders are building a medical app… and they don’t even know it.
Why do so many smart teams, full of talented engineers and entrepreneurs, fall into this trap?
There are three big reasons.
First: the line between wellness and medical is paper-thin. The very same app can live on both sides of that line. Take a simple step tracker: if it’s just for counting your fitness goals, that’s wellness. If it’s used for rehabilitation after knee surgery, it’s medical. Exact same app, two completely different worlds.
Second: regulations are complicated. People misinterpret them and believe there are on the non-medical side.
And third: plain lack of knowledge. Many founders simply don’t know the existing regulations apply to their solution or sometimes they assume disclaimers will protect them. Or they think: “If doctors don’t use my app, then it can’t be medical.”

My passion for healthcare stems from my personal and family background.
I have spent the last 20 years as a patient in different doctor's offices and hospitals, and I come from a medical family. My dad was a surgeon and my mom was a nurse with a medical degree. I understand the pains and needs of both patients and healthcare professionals, and I aim to create solutions that improve quality of life both for patients and medics.
I am also an active speaker, mentor, and expert in various healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship programs, such as SPARK-BIH at Charitè, EIT Health, and Vision Health Pioneers Incubator.
