EMGS is a provider of marine electromagnetic (EM) surveys. The company has its origins from the R&D department at Equinor and has been providing node-based EM surveys since 2002. EMGS has since performed more than 950 surveys for more than 40 customers in both frontier and mature basins worldwide. The company has been listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange since 2007 and is headquartered in Trondheim, Norway.

The EM technology distinguishes between hydrocarbons and other substances like water and has traditionally been used to de-risk prospects identified by seismic surveying and has been frequently used as a requirement in licensing rounds on the NCS. This is a niche technology, whose suitability varies among e.g. geological conditions. EMGS has an asset light strategy, with a fleet currently comprising one chartered-in-vessel, Atlantic Guardian. Due to the oil price drop and cut in E&P spending, the vessel has been cold stacked since April 2020.
