Modern EHRs come with comprehensive handling of patient data to improve the quality of care and patient safety. However, the usability of the systems is not taken for granted as many implementations face challenges in the Nordics and globally. This presentation takes a closer look at the ways to understand more about clinicians' experiences of using such systems, and how their insights can be utilized for making sure that the real clinical working context can be taken into account during implementation, and to follow up the experiences for further assuring the practical utility of an EHR in production use over the whole life cycle.

A specific focus of his presentation is on qualitative understanding and insights of the professional users as those have been recognized as critical factors to make EHR implementations successful. Furthermore, as an increasing number of EHR systems are going to be deployed in the cloud, there are specific considerations when collecting contextual data that is containing sensitive patient data which must be securely handled and privacy protection of the patients' data is of utmost importance.
