Due to plenty of useful characteristics and low production costs, plastics was and still is a huge commercial success. The demographic and wealth expansion in developing countries will further drive volumes and therefore, plastic waste will continue to grow. While steel, aluminum, glass, and paper already have high recycling rates of 80% and more at least in developed countries, recycling rates of plastics are still lagging. In this session, we will discuss main limiting factors, provide an overview on the status of plastic recycling in the EU and Germany, and compare the most promising technologies that are available today.
