We will encounter the discovery of EEG to modern brain computer interfaces through EEG and other modern methods. How did we go from wanting to read minds, to using this technology in the treatment, diagnosis and psychoeducation of mental health disorders? In this documentary/seminar we explore the complex and fascinating world of brain computer interfaces and neurofeedback in psychiatry.

Prostate cancer diagnoses are uncertain in up to 40% of all cases. Unnecessary impotence and incontinence, or in worst case death, can be prevented by diagnoses of higher precision.PAS, Prostate Analysis System, is an AI-based prostate cancer risk grading system developed by Spearpoint Analytics AB in a co-operation with the world renown Martini Klinik in Hamburg. The challenge is to decide “what treatment when” and today’s standard analysis technique (from the 1960´s) has problems with low correlation to outcome and variation in grading by different pathologists. PAS improves both the quality and the reproducibility of the risk analysis which leads to more accurate treatments.

The IBD Symptom Diary is a digital application that was developed to improve the patient care and information sharing between the patient and the healthcare professionals. The Symptom diary allows patients to monitor their symptoms and well-being daily. It even offers the patients the visibility to certain lab parameters, used to monitor their treatment, which are derived from the IBD register. The IBD register is used by healthcare professionals in Finland and it is integrated in the hospital's electronic health record systems and synchronized with the Symptom Diary. This gives the health care professionals the opportunity to monitor their patients' symptoms and well-being more closely between follow-up visits.

In Finland, constant efforts have been made during the past years to create disease specific quality registers that enable gathering and analyzing clinical data on national level.A common platform for collecting data from different sources is used in many diseases by several hospitals in Finland. The different hospitals have their own data base but the clinical content is same for all allowing the national benchmarking between the hospitals. Data harmonization and standardization is going on even on European level allowing the high-quality data to be more effectively used for international research and to be efficiently combined with other data sources. The disease specific platform gathers relevant data automatically from the hospitals’ electronic health record systems, from the healthcare professionals and from the patients. This database can be utilized for reports and analytics, research, benchmarking and for many other purposes to improve the quality of care and to develop better treatments in the future.

Modern EHRs come with comprehensive handling of patient data to improve the quality of care and patient safety. However, the usability of the systems is not taken for granted as many implementations face challenges in the Nordics and globally. This presentation takes a closer look at the ways to understand more about clinicians' experiences of using such systems, and how their insights can be utilized for making sure that the real clinical working context can be taken into account during implementation, and to follow up the experiences for further assuring the practical utility of an EHR in production use over the whole life cycle.

Virtual Reality is gaining an increased interest for use-cases in healthcare. One of the main use-cases is through distracting Virtual Reality experiences, decreasing pain, anxiety and stress with patients in healthcare. In just one year, SyncVR Medical has implemented VR in 15 Danish and 5 Swedish hospitals in over 30 departments. Implementations range from small scale feasibility pilots to several randomized controlled trials which show the effectiveness of VR in healthcare. VR is being adopted widely by the Scandinavian healthcare system! The SyncVR Medical platform is the first CE certified VR medical device in Scandinavia. Through a tight collaboration with hospitals, Virtual Reality has been accepted, integrated and used as a new tealthtech in the Scandinavian healthcare system and will be scaled up even further.

Itch after mosquito bites can effectively be reduced by applying concentrated heat of ~50°C (hyperthermia). Study data regarding the working principle remains scarce. A decentralized study (n=2500) with a smartphone powered and controlled bite healer shows the fast and effective reduction of itch intensity after such a treatment. Additionally, data of more than 3 000 000 insect bite treatments was analyzed giving deep insights into the mosquito burden of the population. This data has the potential to predict and control mosquito plagues and spread of mosquito borne diseases.

The internet of things is expanding, and several new solutions are suggested to improve health care services. However, when it comes to the investigation of feasibility and impact of new eHealth care solutions a gap between the technology society and the health care system seems to exist. It might seem obvious that a new design of a wearable such as a smart t-shirt, which has sensors embedded which generates measurements flows e.g. electrocardiogram, thoracic and abdominal respiration, might be the obvious tool to take better care of fragile oncology patients with little awareness of own health. We here share a model for testing the possible potential of a smart t-shirt in close collaboration with patients, and the obstacles to do this applying with GDPR, legal matters and local regulations.
