Hydro Havrand Presenting Company

Presentation
As part of Hydro’s strategic direction of strengthening its position in low carbon aluminium and exploring new growth opportunities within new energy sources, Hydro established a separate green hydrogen company back in 2021. Hydro Havrand will develop, operate, and own green hydrogen facilities, and provide expertise to enable customers to transition to renewable energy. Enabling the switch from gas to renewable energy-based hydrogen at several of Hydro’s own sites as well as developing and serving the external market. Replacing natural gas for heating purposes in aluminium production with carbon-free hydrogen will contribute towards Hydro’s global commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030. Havrand leverages Hydro’s 4 GW potential offtake and energy expertise as a springboard to mature its portfolio and capture global opportunities. The company has commenced projects at Hydro’s Årdal, Norway, smelter and Vetlanda, Sweden, extrusions facility to introduce green hydrogen into industrial processes.

Havrand announced signing an MoU with the oil giant Shell in late 2021. The joint venture aims to jointly produce and supply hydrogen from renewable electricity in hubs centered around Hydro’s and Shell’s own businesses. The JV’s main purpose is to supply customers in heavy industries, the maritime sector and road transport with renewably sourced energy in the form of hydrogen, and supply this where they see strong potential for scaling production.

Their ambition is to be the leading provider of industrial fuel switch solutions and are now investing in creating a world-class team to deliver on their objectives of providing green hydrogen at speed and scale, building on their owner company Hydro’s 115 years of experience within renewable energy and industrial development
