DHT was formed and listed on NYSE in 2005. BW Group – owned by the Sohmen-Pao family – is the second largest shareholder, controlling 15% after it sold its VLCC fleet to the company in 2017. As of Q3 2021, FMR is the major shareholder, with a near 20% stake. Starting off with three VLCCs and four aframaxes on long-term TCs, the company went on and acquired two additional suezmaxes on long-term bareboat charters around the end of 2007.

In 2010, the company underwent a reorganization of the company structure and some months later changed management, with Mr. Svein Moxnes Harfjeld and Mr. Trygve P. Munthe joining the company. From there on, the company changed its strategy from being a more 'lease type' business into being an operational ship owner. Four years later, DHT acquired Samco Shipholding and its seven VLCCs. In 2017, DHT acquired BW Group’s VLCC fleet of 11 vessels in total. The transaction led BW Group to become a significant shareholder.

Today, DHT has a pure VLCC fleet, with 26 vessels and a total capacity of 7.9 million dwt. The average age of the fleet is around 8 years. DHT has done extensive fleet renewal lately, well suited for the new IMO regulations in 2023.
